Default Colors in Photoshop (macOS)
Press D to set the foreground color to black and the background color to white.
What it does
Many tools and commands use the two colors at the bottom of the toolbar: brushes paint with the foreground color, and gradients and some filters use both. Resetting them gives a known starting point. On a layer mask the defaults are the other way round, white in front and black behind, which is what painting on a mask needs.
